The dataset provides natural roofing slate consumption in million m² of roof area laid for every quarter from Q1/2021 to Q4/2031 – as historical market data and forecast.

It covers natural slate, a cleavable stone that is only split and cut, so it needs little energy. Laid as traditional German or scale slating, it is a premium covering lasting over a century. Its focus is renovation and heritage conservation: churches, castles, listed buildings and historic stock, notably in the Eifel, Sauerland, Westerwald and Moselle regions. Fibre cement imitation slate is excluded. As most slate is imported, the dataset measures roof area laid in Germany rather than production.

Unlike clay and concrete tiles, slate hardly tracks the construction cycle. It grew below average in the boom, held back by long lead times and scarce roofers, and fell only slightly in the downturn, as heritage and privately funded refurbishment continued while new build collapsed. Where heritage rules prescribe slate there is little substitution; standard roofs remain the domain of clay and concrete. A revival of natural materials supports mild growth.

Which questions about the roofing slate market does the dataset answer?

How far did slate consumption fall in the downturn, and how does it develop then?

How is slate roofing split between residential and non-residential buildings?

How large is new build compared with re-roofing of existing buildings?

How does structural growth in natural slate roofing develop to 2031?

Who is the dataset for?

Slate producers and importers use the series for sales and sourcing planning, makers of fixings and underlays for forecasting. Specialist roofers, merchants, heritage bodies and architects gain a view of demand; investors and analysts can assess a resilient premium niche.

Data basis and methodology

The dataset shows the total market and the split by new build and renovation and by residential and non-residential. The model combines building completions, building permits and re-roofing activity with pitched-roof geometry per square metre of floor area, the slate share per segment and a factor for heritage demand largely decoupled from the construction cycle. Volumes were derived from stock, equipment and renewal parameters and checked for plausibility against available industry information and internal data.

Delivered as CSV and Excel files, each in German and English, with 44 quarterly values.
