Wallbox market Germany: sales and forecast to 2031

How is the wallbox market in Germany developing? This dataset provides sales of wallboxes with 11 or 22 kW alternating current (AC) charging power in thousand units for every quarter from Q1/2021 to Q4/2031 – as historical market data and forecast.

It covers permanently installed charging stations for electric cars at single- and two-family houses, individual parking spaces of multi-family houses and non-public company car parks, including replacements. Public charging points, direct current (DC) fast chargers, mobile chargers, cabling without a charger and car park systems with load management are excluded.

There are neither official nor industry association wallbox sales statistics: private charging points are only registered with grid operators, and manufacturers publish no unit sales. Demand follows registrations of electric cars and plug-in hybrids; purchase premiums, charging subsidies, their expiry and EU fleet emission targets show the strong influence of policy. The wallbox is mainly a retrofit product. The amended German Building Electromobility Infrastructure Act (GEIG) tightens rules for new non-residential parking, and the first large generation of units will need replacing later in the forecast period.

Which questions about the wallbox market does the dataset answer?

  • How many wallboxes will be installed in Germany until 2031 – in total and per construction segment?
  • How is demand split between retrofitting and new construction?
  • How strongly do wallbox sales grow until 2031, and in which years do they dip temporarily?
  • How does the quarterly trend compare with in-house capacity planning?

Who is the dataset for?

The dataset is aimed at manufacturers of wallboxes and charging technology, electrical wholesalers and electricians, energy suppliers and car dealers as well as investors, analysts and consultants. It supports sales planning, location and capacity decisions.

Data basis and methodology

The values are broken down by new construction and renovation (retrofitting) as well as residential and non-residential buildings and are also available as a total market. The forecast is based on a model of electric car registrations, the share of owners with their own wallbox, dwellings and parking spaces per m² of floor area, building completions and replacement demand. Volumes were derived from stock, equipment and renewal parameters and checked for plausibility against available industry information and internal data.

Delivered as CSV and Excel files, each in German and English, with 44 quarterly values. Related datasets: Charging infrastructure for car parks (load management), Home battery storage, PV module pitched roof (on-roof) and all data on heating, ventilation, air conditioning and energy.
