Description

Vapour control layer market Germany: consumption and forecast to 2031

How is the vapour control layer market in Germany developing? The dataset quantifies consumption of vapour barriers, vapour retarders and airtightness membranes in million m² of installed area for every quarter from Q1/2021 to Q4/2031 – as historical market data and forecast.

It covers film membranes on the warm, room side of insulation. They prevent condensation in the insulation (moisture protection to DIN 4108-3) and form the airtight layer (DIN 4108-7). Types differ in their sd value, the equivalent air layer thickness for vapour diffusion: polyethylene (PE) barriers, humidity-variable polyamide (PA) membranes, fleece-backed and aluminium-faced films. Uses are insulated pitched roofs, hall flat roofs on steel decks and timber frame walls. Bituminous vapour barriers, construction films and roof underlays are excluded.

Demand follows roof insulation: the German Buildings Energy Act (GEG) requires insulation when a roof covering is renewed, and insulating from inside or above the rafters needs a new vapour control layer. Timber construction adds demand, as every timber frame wall contains an airtightness membrane. Weak new build weighs on volumes, while roof refurbishment is more stable; after a mid-decade trough, volumes should rise again. Humidity-variable membranes are shifting the material mix.

Which questions about the vapour control layer market does the dataset answer?

  • How far does roof refurbishment support consumption while new build is weak?
  • When does consumption reach its low point, and how strongly does it rise afterwards?
  • How does capacity planning match this volume path?
  • How is installed area split between residential and non-residential buildings?

Who is the dataset for?

Membrane manufacturers use the series for capacity and sales planning, film and fleece suppliers for volume forecasts. Merchants manage stock, carpenters, roofers and timber builders match order books. Investors and analysts use the data for refurbishment scenarios.

Data basis and methodology

The data cover new build and renovation, each split into residential and non-residential buildings, plus the total market. The model links building completions, building permits and roof refurbishment with product-specific parameters such as roof area per m² of floor area, membrane overlaps and the share of roofs and timber walls with a film membrane. Volumes were derived from stock, equipment and renewal parameters and checked for plausibility against available industry information and internal data.

Delivered as CSV and Excel files, each in German and English, with 44 quarterly values. Related datasets: Roof underlay membrane, Roof insulation mineral wool (glass/stone), Roof insulation PUR/PIR (rigid foam) and all data on roofs.
