Consumer unit market Germany: sales in thousand units and forecast to 2031

How is the consumer unit market in Germany developing? The dataset tracks sales of sub-distribution boards for dwellings in thousand units, as a quarterly series from Q1/2021 to Q4/2031 – as historical market data and forecast.

The sub-distribution board, commonly called fuse box, is the enclosure holding miniature circuit breakers, residual current devices and other modular devices. Flush and surface-mounted boards including housing and cover are counted; size is measured in rows of twelve modules, with at least four rows recommended for multi-room flats. Usually each dwelling gets one board, detached houses sometimes a second for cellar or garage. Meter cabinets, service connection boxes, industrial control cabinets and the protective devices themselves are excluded.

Within electrical installation, the sub-distribution board benefits particularly strongly from building electrification: heat pumps, wallboxes and photovoltaics need dedicated circuits and often require a larger or additional board. Sales have therefore followed the ups and downs of these technologies, probably overlaid in part by wholesale stocking and destocking, while rows per board keep increasing. In non-residential buildings every tenancy unit needs its own circuits, yet housing remains by far the larger customer. With completions falling, weight shifts clearly to renovation; the enclosure is fitted during rough-in.

Which questions about the consumer unit market does the dataset answer?

  • How many boards go into new dwellings and tenancy units each quarter, and how many into renovated buildings?
  • How does the non-residential share of board sales develop?
  • From when do board sales grow again, and how strongly through 2031?
  • How does the new-build share change as completions decline?

Who is the dataset for?

Makers of small distribution boards plan capacity and variant mix, suppliers of sheet metal, plastic housings and DIN rails their call-offs. Wholesalers manage stock coverage, electricians and energy advisers gauge their retrofit potential, and investors and analysts track renovation demand in existing buildings.

Data basis and methodology

Results cover each combination of new build or renovation with residential or non-residential use, plus the total. The volume framework links completions, permits and renovation activity with boards per dwelling or tenancy unit, the renewal rate of old installations and additional boards per electrification project. The model was cross-checked against available market and industry data as well as internal data.

Delivered as CSV and Excel files, each in German and English, with 44 quarterly values. Related datasets: RCD/MCB circuit breakers, Meter cabinet, NYM installation cable and all data on electrical, smart building and security.
