Structural precast market Germany: tonnage and forecast to 2031

How is the structural precast market in Germany developing? The dataset provides demand for structural precast concrete elements – columns, beams and girders – in German building construction in million tonnes for every quarter from Q1/2021 to Q4/2031 – as historical market data and forecast.

The dataset counts factory-made, mostly linear load-bearing members of reinforced and prestressed concrete: columns, girders, beams, purlins and downstand beams. These members support halls, logistics, commercial, office and car park buildings and underground garages. Volumes are given by weight. Flat elements (slabs, double walls, stairs), prefabricated garages, ready-mixed concrete and bridge beams are excluded.

Demand comes predominantly from non-residential construction; in housing, use is largely limited to columns, downstand beams and apartment buildings with underground parking. After the 2022 boom, commercial building slumped in 2023; in 2025, commercial, logistics and data centre projects stabilised the market despite falling completions. Structurally, precast is gaining ground over in-situ concrete: skills shortages on site, serial construction and factory automation make it more competitive. Steel and timber-hybrid construction, competing for the same projects, limit this trend. In existing buildings, extensions, storey additions and conversions add volume.

Which questions about the structural precast market does the dataset answer?

  • How many tonnes of columns, girders and beams are installed each quarter?
  • How is demand split between non-residential and residential buildings?
  • What share do extensions and conversions hold compared with new build?
  • When does demand bottom out, and how does tonnage develop to 2031?

Who is the dataset for?

Precast plants with a frame programme use it to plan capacity, prestressing beds and formwork investment. Suppliers of cement, prestressing steel, rebar and connectors gain a sales basis. General contractors, logistics and commercial developers, structural engineers and analysts use the series for market analysis and project planning.

Data basis and methodology

The dataset shows the total market and its split by new build/renovation and residential/non-residential buildings. The model links completions, permits and renovation activity with frame weight per square metre of floor area, the slowly rising share of area with a precast frame and a shell construction lead time. The model was cross-checked against available market and industry data as well as internal data.
