Description
EPS roof insulation market Germany: consumption and forecast to 2031
How is the EPS roof insulation market in Germany developing? The dataset reports domestic consumption of expanded polystyrene (EPS) roof boards in million m³ for every quarter from Q1/2021 to Q4/2031 – as historical market data and forecast. The volume unit reflects insulation thickness.
The data cover EPS boards for roof insulation, almost exclusively on flat roofs: laid above the deck in warm roofs, compression-resistant enough for walkable areas, light and low-cost – standard on cost-sensitive commercial roofs. Pitched roofs mainly use mineral wool between and polyurethane or polyisocyanurate (PUR/PIR) rigid foam above the rafters. EPS in facades and floors is excluded.
Consumption is concentrated in non-residential buildings and new build. EPS fell harder than any other insulant in the downturn and then recovers only modestly, as it slowly loses share on roofs: rising thermal requirements under the German Buildings Energy Act (GEG) and, in future, the EU Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) mean thicker build-ups, favouring slimmer PIR. Inverted roofs beneath green, terrace and solar areas use extruded polystyrene (XPS), as EPS absorbs water. Strict fire rules for high-rise, special-purpose and large industrial buildings favour non-combustible stone wool. In refurbishment, disposal of old boards with the flame retardant hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) adds cost.
Which questions about the EPS roof insulation market does the dataset answer?
- When does EPS roof insulation consumption reach its trough?
- How strong is the recovery in EPS roof volumes up to 2031?
- How much weight do non-residential buildings carry versus residential ones?
- How much volume goes into roof refurbishment versus new buildings?
Who is the dataset for?
EPS producers plan capacity and plant utilisation; expandable polystyrene suppliers forecast raw material volumes. Roofing merchants align stock, while roofing and waterproofing contractors gauge their potential on commercial roofs. Specifiers, rival suppliers, investors and analysts track EPS on flat roofs.
Data basis and methodology
Data cover new build and renovation of residential and non-residential buildings plus the total market. The model links building completions, permits and renovation activity with the EPS share of roof area per segment and typical insulation thickness. Volumes derive from total EPS consumption and a slowly declining roof share. The model was cross-checked against available market and industry data as well as internal data.
