Description
Flat roof solar market Germany: capacity additions in MWp and forecast to 2031
How is the flat roof solar market in Germany developing? The dataset reports installations of photovoltaic (PV) modules on flat roofs in MWp (megawatt peak) for every quarter from Q1/2021 to Q4/2031 – as historical market data and forecast.
The dataset covers modules on flat and low-pitched roofs up to 20 degrees, mostly on tilted racks facing south or east-west, ballasted or anchored: logistics, production and retail halls, offices, apartment blocks, bungalows and garages. Roofs from 21 degrees belong to the pitched-roof dataset. Excluded are building-integrated modules, ground-mounted systems, carports and plug-in solar devices; mounting systems and inverters are separate datasets.
Non-residential buildings and retrofits on existing hall roofs dominate, independent of roof renovation. In new build, state solar obligations and, for non-residential buildings, the planned EU solar mandate raise equipment rates. Retrofit demand followed the energy price crisis and the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) 2023, then normalised. The end of fixed feed-in tariffs for new systems from 2027 dampens retrofits, but less than on pitched roofs, as larger systems keep the market premium and self-consumption prevails in commercial use. Afterwards, power prices, storage and falling system costs support a recovery.
Which questions about the flat roof solar market does the dataset answer?
- How have flat roof module installations developed since 2021?
- What share do retrofits on existing roofs take compared with new build?
- When does installed capacity bottom out, and how strong is the recovery?
- How is capacity split between residential and non-residential buildings?
Who is the dataset for?
Module manufacturers and importers plan sales for the commercial rooftop segment. Racking and inverter suppliers derive demand. Installers gauge workload from hall projects; owners of large roofs assess potential, investors and analysts map the commercial rooftop market in their market models.
Data basis and methodology
Installations are split into new build and renovation, each for residential and non-residential buildings, plus the total market. Completions, building permits and modernisation activity are converted via module output per m² of floor area, the share of new floor area with flat roof PV and the annual retrofit rate. The model was validated against industry association statistics, official statistics and internal data.
Delivered as CSV and Excel files, each in German and English, with 44 quarterly values. Related datasets: PV module pitched roof (on-roof), PV mounting system (pitched and flat roof), PV inverter (string/hybrid) and all data on heating, ventilation, air conditioning and energy.
