Description
Solar inverter market Germany: sales in thousand units and forecast to 2031
How is the solar inverter market in Germany developing? The dataset quantifies sales of photovoltaic (PV) inverters for building systems in thousand units per quarter from Q1/2021 to Q4/2031 – as historical market data and forecast.
Inverters convert direct current from the modules into grid-compliant alternating current (AC). Covered are string inverters serving one or more module strings and hybrid inverters with an extra battery port, the standard on buildings. Homes usually need one device per system, commercial roofs several. Counted are first installations and replacements of failed units. Excluded are micro-inverters of plug-in solar devices, central inverters of ground-mounted plants and separate battery inverters of AC-coupled home storage.
First installations follow rooftop additions: the energy price crisis and Germany’s renewable energy law (EEG) in its 2023 version lifted volumes, which then normalised; the end of fixed feed-in tariffs for new systems from 2027 dampens them again. A second, funding-independent driver is growing: replacement. As the installed base ages, replacements of failed units rise steadily and cushion declines; the strong installation years since 2022 reach typical failure age only in the 2030s. Unit numbers therefore fluctuate less than installed module capacity. Germany covers its needs mainly through imports.
Which questions about the solar inverter market does the dataset answer?
- What share of units goes to existing buildings, including retrofits and replacements?
- How far do unit sales fall up to 2027, and how fast do they recover?
- How are devices split between residential and non-residential buildings?
- How are unit sales distributed across the quarters of a year?
Who is the dataset for?
Inverter manufacturers and importers plan production, supply chains and service capacity. Wholesalers plan stock and spare parts. Installers estimate replacement jobs, portfolio operators their maintenance. Investors and analysts assess how business with new systems and the installed base develops.
Data basis and methodology
Units are shown for new build and renovation, residential and non-residential, and in total. Completions, permits and modernised floor area are converted via capacity per m², devices per MWp in home and commercial segments, PV equipment rates and a failure distribution across installation years. The model was cross-checked against available market and industry data as well as internal data.
Delivered as CSV and Excel files, each in German and English, with 44 quarterly values. Related datasets: PV module pitched roof (on-roof), Home battery storage, Plug-in solar device (balcony power plant) and all data on heating, ventilation, air conditioning and energy.
