Description
Balcony solar market Germany: sales and forecast to 2031
How is the balcony solar market in Germany developing? This dataset provides sales of plug-in solar devices in thousand units for every quarter from Q1/2021 to Q4/2031 – as historical market data and forecast, including unregistered devices.
A plug-in solar device, or balcony power plant, is a plug-and-play photovoltaic system with up to 800 VA inverter output and up to 2,000 Wp module capacity that feeds power into the household grid via a socket, typically on balconies, facades, garage roofs, gardens or outbuildings. Rooftop systems, building-integrated photovoltaics and battery storage are excluded.
The official register only records registered devices, while a considerable share is never registered; the dataset therefore reflects actual demand, including unregistered devices. After the boom driven by the energy price crisis and the German Solar Package I, which simplified registration and raised the output limit, sales are normalising and saturation is growing as first-time buyers with well-suited balconies or gardens become rarer. The right of tenants to install a device under the German Civil Code (BGB), falling prices and balcony storage support demand.
Which questions about the balcony solar market does the dataset answer?
- How many plug-in solar devices will be installed in Germany until 2031 – in total and per construction segment?
- How far do sales fall after the boom, and from when do they stay stable?
- How are sales distributed over the quarters?
- What share do non-residential and new buildings account for?
Who is the dataset for?
The dataset is aimed at manufacturers and importers of plug-in devices, modules and microinverters, suppliers of balcony storage and brackets, DIY, online and electronics retailers, energy suppliers and housing companies as well as investors, analysts and consultants. It supports sales and range planning.
Data basis and methodology
The values are broken down by new construction and renovation (retrofitting) as well as residential and non-residential buildings and are also available as a total market. The forecast is based on a model of penetration per dwelling or non-residential site, plus building completions for new builds. The model was cross-checked against available market and industry data as well as internal data.
Delivered as CSV and Excel files, each in German and English, with 44 quarterly values. Related datasets: Balcony battery storage, Home battery storage, PV module pitched roof (on-roof) and all data on heating, ventilation, air conditioning and energy.
