Passenger elevator market Germany: new installations in thousand units and forecast to 2031

How is the passenger elevator market in Germany developing? The dataset counts passenger lifts newly put into service in thousand units, each quarter from Q1/2021 to Q4/2031 – as historical market data and forecast.

Complete installations under the Lifts Directive 2014/33/EU are included, mostly traction (rope) lifts plus hydraulic units. Every new lift counts, whether in a new building, retrofitted or fully replacing an old one. Partial modernisation of controls, drives or doors, home and platform lifts under the Machinery Directive, goods and construction hoists, escalators, moving walks and stairlifts are excluded.

New lifts go mainly into apartment blocks and into offices, hospitals, schools, hotels and retail; residential buildings account for most growth of the installed base. The collapse in residential building permits reaches installations with a delay; after a trough in 2026, the new-build recovery restores volume. Retrofits and full replacements stabilise demand and gain weight, although many old lifts are modernised several times rather than replaced. Possible upside from accessibility in smaller apartment blocks, housing-company retrofit programmes and an ageing installed base is not included.

Which questions about the passenger elevator market does the dataset answer?

  • How far do installations fall after the residential permit slump, and when is the trough?
  • How much stability do retrofits and replacements provide?
  • When does the housing stock overtake residential new build?
  • How are installations split between residential and non-residential buildings?

Who is the dataset for?

Lift manufacturers and suppliers of drives, controllers, ropes and doors plan production and installation capacity. Service firms schedule staff, housing companies and developers budget retrofits and projects, and building services engineers get volume benchmarks. Investors and analysts follow a market where stock and new build interact.

Data basis and methodology

Besides the total, the data split installations into new build and renovation, residential and non-residential. New build links completions and permits to lifts per 1,000 m² of floor space and the share of space in buildings with a lift; in the stock, renovation activity and the replacement and retrofit rate set volumes. Installation precedes handover by about two quarters. The model results were cross-checked against official statistics, industry association data and internal surveys.

Delivered as CSV and Excel files, each in German and English, with 44 quarterly values. Related datasets: Home lift / platform lift, Sub-distribution / consumer unit, Fire collar / fire foam and all data on electrical, smart building and security.
