Building wire market Germany: consumption in million linear metres and forecast to 2031

How is the building wire market in Germany developing? Domestic consumption of NYM sheathed cable is measured in million linear metres, without gaps for each quarter between Q1/2021 and Q4/2031 – as historical market data and forecast.

The product is the fixed cable laid in walls, ceilings and screed linking distribution boards, sockets, switches and luminaires: NYM-J to DIN VDE 0250-204 with copper conductors and PVC sheath, typically 3×1.5 mm² for lighting, 3×2.5 mm² for socket circuits and up to 5×6 mm² for cookers, heat pumps or wallboxes. Halogen-free NHXMH for schools, hospitals and hotels is included. Data, KNX bus, fire alarm and circuit-integrity cables, NYY underground cable, single cores in conduit and medium-voltage cables are not.

Length depends on the number of circuits, so electrification has a stronger effect here than on switches: every heat pump, wallbox and photovoltaic system needs its own circuits, and larger cross sections add to this. Non-residential buildings take a lot of cable, but much of it is data and bus wiring. In the stock, ageing installations and refurbishments create demand; in new build, cable goes in during rough-in before screed and plaster.

Which questions about the building wire market does the dataset answer?

  • How many metres of sheathed cable do new build and renovation use per quarter?
  • Which part of cable consumption falls on residential, and which on non-residential buildings?
  • When does cable consumption reach its low point, and how much does it rise by 2031?
  • How does cable demand shift between new build and renovation up to 2031?

Who is the dataset for?

Cable plants plan output and copper sourcing, compound suppliers their PVC and polyolefin volumes. Wholesalers stock coils and drums, installers and planners estimate project requirements, and analysts gain a volume indicator for building wiring unaffected by copper prices.

Data basis and methodology

Metres are allocated to new build and renovation and to residential and non-residential buildings, then summed. The basis is completions, permits and renovation activity, weighted with cable metres per m² of floor space, renewal rates of building electrics and a surcharge for electrification projects. The model was cross-checked against available market and industry data as well as internal data.

Delivered as CSV and Excel files, each in German and English, with 44 quarterly values. Related datasets: Sub-distribution / consumer unit, RCD/MCB circuit breakers, Schuko socket (flush-mounted) and all data on electrical, smart building and security.
