Description
Meter cabinet market Germany: demand in thousand units and forecast to 2031
How is the meter cabinet market in Germany developing? The dataset measures domestic demand in thousand units – one cabinet per unit, not individual meter positions – for each quarter from Q1/2021 to Q4/2031 as historical market data and forecast.
Installed in the service connection or plant room, the cabinet houses meter positions, the main supply branch, surge protection and space for smart meter gateways, and must meet grid operators’ technical connection conditions and the VDE-AR-N 4100 application rule. Distribution boards in flats and on floors (combined with meter cabinets in official statistics), circuit breakers, meters and gateways are excluded.
Every new building gets one cabinet, so new build tracks building numbers. The stock matters more: cabinets are replaced on occasion rather than for age, mostly when a photovoltaic (PV) system is connected, also for heat pumps, wallboxes, higher loads or rewiring, as the grid operator then requires an up-to-date meter position. The solar boom lifted demand markedly before falling PV and heat pump installations dampened it. The smart meter rollout under the Metering Point Operation Act (MsbG) requires up-to-date meter positions and is included in base demand. After a trough in 2027, electrification of heating and transport drives growth.
Which questions about the meter cabinet market does the dataset answer?
- How far did cabinet demand rise and fall between 2021 and 2025?
- When does demand bottom out, and how strongly does it grow to 2031?
- How are sales split between new build and replacement in the stock?
- How large is the residential share?
Who is the dataset for?
Enclosure manufacturers and their suppliers plan capacity. Electrical wholesalers and contractors manage stock and fitting capacity, grid and metering operators estimate meter-position upgrades, and PV, heat pump and charging providers, investors and analysts read the series as a mirror of building electrification.
Data basis and methodology
Totals are split into new build and renovation for residential and non-residential buildings. New build derives from completions and permits with cabinets per 1,000 m² of floor area; the stock combines modernisation activity, an occasion-driven replacement rate and coupling to PV, heat pump and wallbox installations. The model was cross-checked against available market and industry data as well as internal data.
Delivered as CSV and Excel files, each in German and English, with 44 quarterly values. Related datasets: Sub-distribution / consumer unit, RCD/MCB circuit breakers, NYM installation cable and all data on electrical, smart building and security.
