Description

Lightweight concrete block market Germany: sales of pumice and expanded clay blocks and forecast to 2031

How is the lightweight concrete block market in Germany developing? The dataset provides sales of lightweight concrete masonry units in thousand m³ of masonry for every quarter from Q1/2021 to Q4/2031, as historical market data and forecast.

The dataset covers cement-bound blocks with light, porous aggregates such as natural pumice, expanded clay or expanded glass instead of sand and gravel. The blocks are light, easy to lay and insulate well against heat and sound; load capacity lies between aerated concrete and calcium silicate. Use centres on load-bearing walls in single-family houses, concentrated in the Rhineland and Rhineland-Palatinate around the Neuwied Basin. Multi-storey and non-residential use is minor; renovation covers extensions, basement walls and conversions.

Two effects overlap: the 2023–2024 slump in owner-occupied housing, which hit lightweight blocks hardest of all walling materials, and a long-running structural loss of relevance. Aerated concrete and nationally available clay brick displace lightweight blocks; calcium silicate prevails in apartment buildings. Domestic pumice is largely exhausted, forcing a costlier switch to expanded clay, glass and imports. The profile as a mineral, regional and recyclable material is likely to secure a niche. Still, no noticeable recovery is expected, as lost share largely absorbs the housing revival.

Which questions about the lightweight concrete block market does the dataset answer?

  • How far did sales of pumice and expanded clay blocks fall in 2023 and 2024?
  • Do sales find a floor after the trough, or does decline continue?
  • What do extensions, basement walls and conversions contribute compared with new build?
  • How is masonry volume split between residential and non-residential buildings?

Who is the dataset for?

The dataset supports block producers, suppliers of expanded clay, glass and cement, regional merchants and masonry contractors. Investors and analysts gain a volume basis for capacity and consolidation questions.

Data basis and methodology

Values are split by new build/renovation and residential/non-residential buildings, plus the total market. The model uses completions, permits and renovation activity with masonry volume per m² of floor area for thick single-leaf walls and the regional market share in new housing; the lasting loss of share is built in. The model was cross-checked against available market and industry data as well as internal data.

Delivered as CSV and Excel files, each in German and English, with 44 quarterly values. Related datasets: Autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC), Clay bricks, Calcium silicate units and all data on structural work, load-bearing structure and outdoor facilities.
