Intumescent paint market Germany: consumption in thousand tonnes and forecast to 2031

How is the intumescent paint market in Germany developing? The dataset reports domestic consumption of reactive fire protection systems for structural steel in thousand tonnes, the usual sales unit, in each quarter from Q1/2021 to Q4/2031 – as historical market data and forecast.

When heated beyond about 250 °C, the thin dry film swells into a thick carbon char that keeps steel below the temperature at which it loses load-bearing capacity, reaching R15 to R120. Water-based systems lead, followed by solvent-based, epoxy and sprayed products. Corrosion-protection primers and topcoats, fire retardants for timber and board encasement are excluded.

Demand arises where load-bearing steel needs fire resistance – almost only in non-residential buildings: offices, car parks, schools, industry. Many single-storey halls need no rating under the Model Industrial Building Guideline (MIndBauRL), so little of the steel surface is coated. Changes of use and upgrades of existing steelwork add renovation demand. More steel in multi-storey building, exposed steel and shop coating point to higher usage; R30 with hot-dip galvanised steel, less steel in halls and timber-hybrid construction point to lower usage. As these effects largely offset each other, the series follows non-residential construction.

Which questions about the intumescent paint market does the dataset answer?

  • How sharply does coating consumption fall in non-residential new build?
  • What share of consumption comes from renovating existing steel structures?
  • How long does the trough last before volumes pick up?
  • How is consumption spread over the building season?

Who is the dataset for?

Coating producers and their raw material suppliers plan output and purchasing. Steel fabricators with shop coating, painting contractors and paint wholesalers size volumes; structural and fire engineers weigh coating against encasement. Analysts get a series tightly linked to steel and non-residential construction.

Data basis and methodology

Figures cover the total market plus new build and renovation in residential and non-residential buildings. Completions, permits and renovation activity are linked to steel per m² of floor space, steel surface per tonne, the coated share and coating per m² of steel; application closely follows steel erection. Volumes were derived from stock, equipment and renewal parameters and checked for plausibility against available industry information and internal data.
