Description
Roof garden market Germany: newly greened area and forecast to 2031
How is the roof garden market in Germany developing? The dataset quantifies newly installed intensive roof greening in million m² of greened roof area for every quarter from Q1/2021 to Q4/2031 – as historical market data and forecast.
Intensive greening creates walkable roofs with deep substrate, usually from around 25 cm, carrying lawns, perennials, shrubs and even trees, with regular maintenance and irrigation. Typical locations are underground car park decks, roof terraces of apartment buildings, offices and hotels. Lightweight, low-maintenance extensive greening, facade and indoor greening, and the waterproofing and insulation beneath the build-up are covered by separate datasets.
Many cities require roof greening in development plans, fund it or reduce split wastewater charges, so the greened share of new flat roofs rises. Under its climate protection act, Hamburg requires solar green roofs on new buildings from 2027. The effect of the fast-track rule for housing (Section 246e Federal Building Code) on greening requirements is open. As existing roofs rarely carry the loads, roof gardens arise almost only in new build, in existing stock mainly with terraces and structural upgrades. The cost shock and interest rate turnaround hit these elaborate installations early; the current fall in new-build area slows demand again before the rising greening rate drives growth.
Which questions about the roof garden market does the dataset answer?
- How strongly does the new-build slump affect new roof garden area?
- How is roof garden area split between residential and non-residential buildings?
- When does intensive greening grow again, and how strongly to 2031?
- How does the renovation share of greened area develop to 2031?
Who is the dataset for?
Makers of drainage and filter layers, substrate producers and nurseries plan capacity and sales. Landscaping and roof greening contractors gauge their pipeline, suppliers of root barriers and waterproofing follow-on demand. Landscape architects, developers, municipalities, investors and analysts gain a planning basis.
Data basis and methodology
The series covers new build and renovation of residential and non-residential buildings plus the total market. Starting from building completions, permits and roof refurbishment, flat roof area per m² of floor area is derived and combined with a rising greening rate. The model was cross-checked against available market and industry data as well as internal data.
Delivered as CSV and Excel files, each in German and English, with 44 quarterly values. Related datasets: Extensive green roof, Plastic roofing membranes (PVC/TPO/EPDM), Liquid-applied waterproofing (PMMA/PUR) and all data on roofs.
