Description
Heat pump water heater market Germany: demand in thousand units and forecast to 2031
How is the heat pump water heater market in Germany developing? The dataset quantifies domestic demand for hot water heat pumps in thousand units, quarter by quarter from Q1/2021 to Q4/2031 – as historical market data and forecast.
A hot water heat pump is a compact unit combining an air-to-water heat pump with a potable water cylinder, heating domestic hot water only with warmth from cellar, exhaust or outdoor air. Excluded are space heating heat pumps, tanks without their own heat pump, central systems for apartment blocks and businesses, and split air conditioners. Units go almost only into one- and two-family houses, plus bakeries, canteens or sports facilities.
Typical triggers lie in existing homes: replacing an old electric water heater, decoupling hot water from the boiler, or using rooftop solar power. The gas price crisis and the debate over the German Buildings Energy Act (GEG) pulled demand forward before it slumped and recovered. As the unit qualifies for funding only alongside an eligible heat generator, subsidies matter little. Carbon pricing and EU emissions trading for buildings help, while space heating heat pumps, which usually also supply hot water, gradually curb add-on sales.
Which questions about the heat pump water heater market does the dataset answer?
- How has demand developed since Q1/2021, and where does it settle after the crisis-driven boom?
- How large is renovation compared with new build?
- What share comes from non-residential buildings?
- How are sales spread across quarters compared with in-house planning?
Who is the dataset for?
Manufacturers of hot water heat pumps plan production and sales, suppliers of compressors and enamelled cylinders their volumes. Wholesalers and installers align stock and advice with modernisation customers. Solar installers use the series for self-consumption offers, analysts for the heat transition.
Data basis and methodology
Values cover new build and renovation in residential and non-residential buildings, plus a total market. The model links completions, permits and modernisation activity with residential buildings per square metre of living space, one unit per equipped house and a penetration path for newly equipped buildings. The model was cross-checked against available market and industry data as well as internal data.
Delivered as CSV and Excel files, each in German and English, with 44 quarterly values. Related datasets: Hot water tank / buffer tank, Solar thermal collector, PV module pitched roof (on-roof) and all data on heating, ventilation, air conditioning and energy.
