Home lift market Germany: sales in thousand units and forecast to 2031

How is the home lift market in Germany developing? This time series records domestic sales of compact lifts for accessible living and building in thousand units, in every quarter between Q1/2021 and Q4/2031 – as historical market data and forecast.

The scope is lifts with at most 0.15 m/s under the Machinery Directive, which avoid the inspection regime of passenger lifts: home lifts with cabin or platform in a light glass or metal shaft, vertical wheelchair platform lifts bridging one storey or a few steps, and inclined platform stairlifts. Lifts Directive installations, seated stairlifts, lifting tables, vehicle hoists and goods lifts are excluded.

The core market is retrofitting in occupied single-family houses as owners age and wish to stay at home; the retrofit rate therefore rises with the population aged 67 and over, which official projections show growing markedly. New homes rarely include a lift from the outset, mostly upmarket ones, while platform lifts serve surgeries, schools, town halls and other public buildings. The ‘age-appropriate conversion’ funding programme has no measurable effect on demand, as eligible costs are far below system prices.

Which questions about the home lift market does the dataset answer?

  • How do lift retrofits in the housing stock develop to 2031?
  • When do sales bottom out, and how fast do they grow afterwards?
  • How much weight does non-residential construction carry against housing?
  • How does the weight shift between new build and retrofits in the stock?

Who is the dataset for?

Lift makers and importers align sales and output with demographic demand; drive and shaft suppliers plan volumes. Dealers and installers gauge market potential, accessibility planners gain orientation, and investors and analysts see a niche shaped more by age structure than by the building cycle.

Data basis and methodology

The total is broken down into new build versus renovation and housing versus non-residential use. Completions and permits are combined with lift density per 1,000 m² floor area and the fitting rate of new buildings; for the stock, a retrofit rate tied to the population aged 67 and over applies. Lifts are installed shortly before handover. Volumes were derived from stock, equipment and renewal parameters and checked for plausibility against available industry information and internal data.
