Description
Home battery market Germany: storage sales in thousand units and forecast to 2031
How is the home battery market in Germany developing? The dataset counts newly installed home storage systems in thousand units for every quarter between Q1/2021 and Q4/2031 – as historical market data and forecast.
Home batteries are fixed storage systems, mostly lithium iron phosphate, that buffer solar power for self-consumption. They are coupled on the direct current (DC) side via a hybrid inverter or on the alternating current (AC) side with their own battery inverter. Covered are units above 1 and up to 30 kW, used by households, small businesses and farms. Plug-in balcony storage up to 1 kW and commercial storage above 30 kW are separate datasets; hybrid inverters count under PV inverters.
The key driver is the rising storage attachment rate of new photovoltaic (PV) systems; heat pumps and wallboxes favour larger units. After peaking with the energy price crisis and the EEG 2023 (Renewable Energy Sources Act), which exempted storage from VAT, sales normalised. The Solar Peak Act, denying new systems payment at negative power prices, raises attachment rates, as does the end of fixed feed-in tariffs for new systems from 2027, though fewer new PV systems curb volumes. Retrofits add demand, from the late 2020s also where older systems leave the tariff after twenty years and switch to self-consumption. Most units are imported.
Which questions about the home battery market does the dataset answer?
- How many home batteries go to new build, how many to the existing stock?
- How do unit numbers develop from the 2023 peak to 2031?
- How sharp is the 2027 decline, and when do installations recover?
- How much weight do non-residential buildings carry versus homes?
Who is the dataset for?
Storage makers and importers plan volumes, cell and battery management suppliers their supply chains. Wholesalers and utilities align ranges, installers their capacity. Investors, banks and analysts assess the self-consumption business.
Data basis and methodology
Values cover new build and renovation in homes and non-residential buildings, plus the total. The model converts completions, permits and modernisation activity into PV systems per floor area and applies attachment rates, stock retrofits and the switch of systems leaving the tariff. The model was validated against industry association statistics, official statistics and internal data.
Delivered as CSV and Excel files, each in German and English, with 44 quarterly values. Related datasets: PV inverter (string/hybrid), Commercial battery storage, Balcony battery storage and all data on heating, ventilation, air conditioning and energy.
