Description

Green facade market Germany: greened area in thousand m² and forecast to 2031

How is the green facade market in Germany developing? The dataset provides newly greened facade area in thousand m² for every quarter from Q1/2021 to Q4/2031 – as historical market data and forecast.

The dataset covers greening systems on external walls in two forms. Ground-based systems use climbing plants rooted in the soil, mostly on trellises of cables, meshes or rods, and account for most of the area. Wall-based systems use containers, troughs or modular living walls with automatic irrigation. Green roofs, indoor greening and the cladding or insulation behind the plants are excluded. Foreign trade plays no role.

Facade greening grows much faster than construction activity. Many larger cities require it in development plans, many municipalities subsidise building greenery directly, and climate adaptation, with heat protection and the sponge city concept, puts it on planners’ agendas. The effect of the construction turbo under Section 246e of the German Federal Building Code (deviations from development plans for housing) is open and not modelled. Ground-based greening is often retrofitted to existing walls, and municipal programmes mainly target existing buildings; wall-based systems mostly sit on office, retail and public buildings. Facade greening is first-time installation, not a replacement cycle, and annual values fluctuate in this small market.

Which questions about the green facade market does the dataset answer?

  • How fast does newly greened facade area grow from 2021 to 2031?
  • How much is retrofitted to existing buildings and how much installed on new ones?
  • How is the area split between residential and non-residential buildings?
  • How do planting season and weather shape quarterly values?

Who is the dataset for?

Makers of trellis systems and modular living walls, irrigation suppliers and nurseries plan capacity. Landscapers, facade contractors and architects gauge order potential; municipalities, developers and analysts assess greening uptake.

Data basis and methodology

The dataset shows the total market and the split by new build and renovation and by residential and non-residential. The model links building completions, building permits and renovation activity with external wall area per square metre of floor area, lower for compact halls and offices, and a rising greening rate; greening follows as the last exterior trade. The model was cross-checked against available market and industry data as well as internal data.

Delivered as CSV and Excel files, each in German and English, with 44 quarterly values. Related datasets: Ventilated rainscreen facade, Timber cladding (boards/rhombus profiles), Mineral exterior render (lime-cement) and all data on facades.
