Description

Fire board market Germany: demand in million m² and forecast to 2031

How is the fire board market in Germany developing? The dataset quantifies domestic demand for fire-rated building boards in million m² of board area, for every quarter from Q1/2021 to Q4/2031 – as historical market data and forecast.

The dataset covers fire-rated gypsum plasterboard (GKF/GKFI, DIN EN 520 type DF), fire-rated gypsum fibreboard, calcium silicate boards for higher ratings and steel encasement, and vermiculite boards, used in partitions, ceilings, shafts and as cladding for steel and timber members rated F30 to F180. These boards are a subset of plasterboard and gypsum fibreboard. Intumescent coatings, penetration seals, fire doors and dampers are excluded.

Demand follows building regulations: stairwells, escape corridors, compartment walls and service shafts need fire resistance from building class 3, whereas detached one- and two-family houses are largely exempt under Section 40 of the German Model Building Code (MBO), leaving non-residential and multi-storey housing dominant. Loft conversions, shaft refurbishment, fire safety upgrades in schools, hospitals and hotels and changes of use make renovation the larger, growing share. The series follows overall gypsum board demand; weak new build slows it until 2026. Encapsulated multi-storey timber construction could add volume but is not modelled.

Which questions about the fire board market does the dataset answer?

  • How hard does the non-residential new-build slump hit board demand, and when does recovery start?
  • How much does renovation weigh against new build?
  • How far has demand for fire-rated boards fallen since 2021?
  • How is board area split between residential and non-residential buildings?

Who is the dataset for?

Producers of plasterboard, gypsum fibre and calcium silicate boards plan capacity; suppliers of gypsum and glass fibre plan volumes. Builders’ merchants manage stock, drywall contractors and fire protection engineers gauge workload, and investors and analysts assess a market driven by building regulations.

Data basis and methodology

The series covers the total market and four segments: new build and renovation, each residential and non-residential. Completions, permits and modernisation activity are combined with board area per m² of floor space and the fire-rated share per segment, aligned with overall gypsum board demand. Volumes were derived from stock, equipment and renewal parameters and checked for plausibility against available industry information and internal data.

Delivered as CSV and Excel files, each in German and English, with 44 quarterly values. Related datasets: Intumescent coating (steel), Fire collar / fire foam, Smoke detector (EN 14604) and all data on electrical, smart building and security.
