Interior wall paint market Germany: demand in million litres and forecast to 2031

How is the interior wall paint market in Germany developing? The dataset quantifies demand for interior dispersion paint in million litres, quarter by quarter from Q1/2021 to Q4/2031 – as historical market data and forecast.

Dispersion paint is a water-based coating with a polyacrylate or polyvinyl acetate binder, titanium dioxide and mineral fillers, water-soluble when wet and water-resistant once dry. It is the standard white finish indoors and the largest single architectural paint product. All wet scrub resistance classes under DIN EN 13300 count; the separately offered latex and heavy-duty paint is included and must not be added on top. Silicate and lime paints, lacquers, primers and facade coatings are excluded.

Most demand comes from existing buildings: walls are repainted repeatedly, especially at tenant changeover, while the first coat in new build occurs once – though a pre-coat and two finishing coats on fresh plaster use far more material than one overcoat. Housing dominates, mirroring the building stock. The housing slump hit professional sales first and DIY sales later. Recovery is expected from 2026 at the earliest, without a return to the pandemic-era boom.

Which questions about the interior wall paint market does the dataset answer?

  • How many litres go into first coats and how many into repainting?
  • What share of interior dispersion paint demand comes from non-residential buildings?
  • When and how strongly does interior painting recover after the housing downturn?
  • How seasonal is demand from new build?

Who is the dataset for?

Paint makers use the series for sales and capacity planning, suppliers of binders, titanium dioxide and fillers for volume outlooks. Wholesalers and DIY stores manage range and stock, painting contractors and housing companies estimate renovation volumes, and analysts track the development of the finishing trades.

Data basis and methodology

The total market is split by new build and renovation and by residential and non-residential buildings. Completions, permits and modernisation activity are combined with painted area per m² of floor space, consumption per coat and repainting intervals. The model was cross-checked against available market and industry data as well as internal data.

Delivered as CSV and Excel files, each in German and English, with 44 quarterly values. Related datasets: Washable / heavy-duty interior paint, Primer / penetrating primer, Silicate paint (interior) and all data on paints, construction chemicals and fastening.
