Description
Cross-laminated timber market Germany: consumption and forecast to 2031
How is the cross-laminated timber market in Germany developing? The dataset provides consumption of cross-laminated timber (CLT) in thousand m³ for every quarter from Q1/2021 to Q4/2031 – as historical market data and forecast. The figures reflect domestic demand including imported elements.
CLT consists of softwood board layers glued crosswise into large, load-bearing solid timber panels for walls, floors and roofs. The panels are prefabricated with openings at the plant and assembled quickly; with suitable build-ups they perform well in fire and acoustic terms. CLT is mainly used in multi-storey timber construction – apartment buildings, schools, nurseries and offices – and in storey extensions. Lightweight timber frame elements and glulam beams are excluded.
CLT is a young product in its market ramp-up and kept growing even during the construction downturn. Drivers are funding for climate-friendly building, multi-storey timber construction and urban densification through storey extensions, which gradually raises the renovation share. Reinforced concrete and calcium silicate masonry remain the main substitutes. Subdued apartment construction and a maturing market will flatten growth; expanded capacity keeps prices under pressure.
Which questions about the cross-laminated timber market does the dataset answer?
- How strongly has consumption of solid timber panels grown since 2021 despite weak residential new build?
- How is CLT consumption split between residential and non-residential buildings?
- How does the split between new build and renovation shift up to 2031?
- When does the market ramp-up flatten, and what path does it take up to 2031?
Who is the dataset for?
CLT manufacturers and investors in new plants use the series to test sales potential and capacity plans; sawmills and adhesive suppliers derive their input demand. Timber contractors, general contractors and developers assess the market for multi-storey timber buildings. Architects, engineers, housing companies and analysts use the series to compare timber with masonry and concrete.
Data basis and methodology
The data cover new build and renovation, each for residential and non-residential buildings, plus the total market. The model combines building completions, building permits and renovation activity with parameters such as timber volume per m² of floor area and the timber share of multi-storey buildings; foreign trade is included. The model was cross-checked against available market and industry data as well as internal data.
Delivered as CSV and Excel files, each in German and English, with 44 quarterly values. Related datasets: Glued laminated timber (Glulam), Timber frame elements (prefabricated), Calcium silicate units and all data on structural work, load-bearing structure and outdoor facilities.
