Description
Commercial battery storage market Germany: storage capacity in MWh and forecast to 2031
How is the commercial battery storage market in Germany developing? The dataset measures newly installed storage capacity in MWh (megawatt hours) in each quarter from Q1/2021 to Q4/2031 – as historical market data and forecast.
Commercial batteries are fixed systems in businesses, halls, offices, farms and large residential complexes with tenant electricity or neighbourhood storage, defined by output above 30 kW up to 1 MW. They shave load peaks, cutting capacity-based grid charges, relieve tight grid connections and raise solar self-consumption. MWh reflects widely varying system sizes. Home storage up to 30 kW, balcony storage and grid-scale systems above 1 MW are excluded.
Unlike rooftop photovoltaics, the segment recently kept growing, driven by technology diffusion rather than the construction cycle. Drivers were the energy price crisis, volatile power prices, falling battery prices and larger systems. Since an amendment to the Energy Industry Act (EnWG), multi-use storage is exempt from grid charges and increasingly trades power. The end of fixed feed-in tariffs from 2027 matters little, as larger systems keep the market premium and self-consumption dominates. Growth flattens as the best sites are developed; downside risks lie in grid charge reform, the planned loss of benefits for atypical grid use and an industrial power price.
Which questions about the commercial battery storage market does the dataset answer?
- How fast does installed capacity grow in existing non-residential buildings?
- How does annual growth of commercial storage develop to 2031?
- How does capacity in new build compare with retrofits?
- What share of newly installed capacity goes to residential buildings?
Who is the dataset for?
Battery system makers, cell suppliers and energy management software providers plan capacity. System integrators, electrical planners and commercial contractors gauge order potential; utilities and power traders assess flexibility offers. Grid operators, investors and analysts track decentralised storage.
Data basis and methodology
The dataset separates new build from renovation and residential from non-residential, and gives total capacity. From completions, permits and modernised floor area the model derives potential sites, multiplies them by growing capacity per system and applies rising penetration of the stock. The model results were cross-checked against official statistics, industry association data and internal surveys.
