Description
Car park EV charging market Germany: charging points in garages and forecast to 2031
How is the car park EV charging market in Germany developing? The dataset records new electric vehicle (EV) charging points in underground and multi-storey car parks, in thousand charging points, for all quarters from Q1/2021 to Q4/2031 – as historical market data and forecast.
The dataset counts non-public alternating current (AC) charging points up to 22 kW in underground and multi-storey car parks of apartment buildings, owners’ associations, offices and commercial buildings. Load management spreads available power across the grid connection; its hardware share and replacements are included. Excluded are single wallboxes at individual spaces, pre-wiring without charging points, public charging and direct current (DC) fast chargers.
Demand rests on more electric cars, many of them company vehicles, and a shift to shared garages. A federal programme subsidises pre-wiring, charging points and bidirectional charging per space in existing multi-unit buildings. From 2027 the amended Building Electric Mobility Infrastructure Act (GEIG) requires pre-wiring and minimum charging points in new buildings with parking and sets duties for large non-residential car parks. Existing housing has no retrofit duty, but condominium law (§ 20 WEG) and tenancy law (§ 554 BGB) ease retrofits. Purchase premiums, fleet emission limits and special depreciation set the short-term pace.
Which questions about the car park EV charging market does the dataset answer?
- How many charging points come from retrofits, how many from new build?
- How did new garage charging points develop from 2021 to the 2024 low?
- How strongly do installations grow in 2026 and 2027?
- How are charging points split between residential and non-residential buildings?
Who is the dataset for?
Charging station, load management and charging service providers plan sales and capacity. Electricians, building services engineers and property managers estimate garage project volumes. Utilities, investors and analysts track private charging.
Data basis and methodology
The series covers residential and non-residential buildings, each in new build and renovation, plus the total. Completions, building permits and modernised floor area are linked to dwellings or parking spaces per area, equipment rates and stock retrofit rates, based on new electric cars and the car park share. Volumes were derived from stock, equipment and renewal parameters and checked for plausibility against available industry information and internal data.
Delivered as CSV and Excel files, each in German and English, with 44 quarterly values. Related datasets: Wallbox (AC, 11/22 kW), Commercial battery storage, PV module flat roof and all data on heating, ventilation, air conditioning and energy.
