Description
Bitumen membrane market Germany: laid area in million m² and forecast to 2031
How is the bitumen membrane market in Germany developing? The dataset provides the consumption of bituminous roofing membranes as the membrane area laid on site in million m² for every quarter from Q1/2021 to Q4/2031 – as historical market data and forecast.
It covers membranes made of oxidised bitumen and polymer-modified bitumen, the standard material for waterproofing flat and low-pitch roofs. Under DIN 18531 they are usually laid in two layers, base and cap sheet, including overlaps and upstands. Plastic and elastomer membranes (a separate dataset) and basement waterproofing are excluded. Bituminous membranes are mainly used on halls, logistics, office and public buildings and on urban apartment blocks.
Demand is driven by refurbishment: the large stock of flat roofs is continuously re-waterproofed, regardless of the new-build cycle. The decline in the downturn was therefore much milder than for clay roof tiles. Single-ply plastic membranes gain share slowly, mainly in new build; existing roofs stay bitumen-heavy and both systems coexist. Polymer-modified bitumen holds up better than oxidised grades. Usable flat roofs with photovoltaics, water retention and greening add further support.
Which questions about the bitumen membrane market does the dataset answer?
- How strongly does the laid membrane area depend on flat-roof refurbishment rather than new build?
- How much of the membrane area goes to non-residential and how much to residential buildings?
- How resilient was the laid area in the downturn, and how does it stabilise to 2031?
- How can capacity and sales planning for bitumen membranes be aligned with this volume path?
Who is the dataset for?
Membrane manufacturers use the series for capacity and sales planning, suppliers of bitumen and polymers for forecasts. Roofing contractors, merchants, flat-roof designers and providers of solar and green roof systems gain a reliable volume basis; investors and analysts can compare systems.
Data basis and methodology
The dataset shows the total market and the split by new build and renovation and by residential and non-residential. The model combines building completions, building permits and renovation activity with the flat-roof share by building type, the bitumen share of waterproofing in new and existing buildings and a factor for two-layer installation. The model was cross-checked against available market and industry data as well as internal data.
Delivered as CSV and Excel files, each in German and English, with 44 quarterly values. Related datasets: Plastic roofing membranes (PVC/TPO/EPDM), Liquid-applied waterproofing (PMMA/PUR), Roof insulation PUR/PIR (rigid foam) and all data on roofs.
