Balcony battery market Germany: devices sold and forecast to 2031

How is the balcony battery market in Germany developing? The dataset maps domestic demand for batteries used with plug-in solar devices in thousand units for each quarter from Q1/2021 to Q4/2031 – as historical market data and forecast.

Balcony batteries are compact units, typically with 1 to 3 kWh usable capacity and up to 800 W output. They store daytime power from the plug-in solar device and feed it into the home grid via the socket in the evening. Each device counts once. Fixed home storage above 1 kW and commercial storage are excluded, as is the plug-in solar device itself; complete kits appear once in each dataset. Mobile power stations without such a link are also excluded.

The market is tightly linked to plug-in solar: kits with storage have become standard, and batteries are retrofitted to existing devices. Some buyers deliberately skip storage because a device without it pays back faster, so equipment stays below full coverage. After a steep ramp-up, growth flattens, and as plug-in solar demand declines, sales later ease slightly. Buyers are almost entirely tenants and owners of existing flats; new buildings usually get rooftop photovoltaics with home storage. Purchases peak in spring and summer.

Which questions about the balcony battery market does the dataset answer?

  • How have sales of balcony batteries developed since 2021?
  • In which year do battery sales peak?
  • How does demand develop after the peak up to 2031?
  • How concentrated is demand in existing flats?

Who is the dataset for?

Battery and kit suppliers and their cell and electronics vendors plan ranges and volumes. DIY stores, electronics and online retailers manage purchasing and seasonal stock; utilities test bundled offers. Housing companies, investors and analysts follow a young consumer segment.

Data basis and methodology

Figures cover new build and renovation, homes and non-residential buildings, and the overall total. The model translates completions, permits and modernisation activity via dwellings or systems per area into plug-in solar devices and multiplies them by the storage attachment rate; unregistered devices are added via a surcharge. The model was cross-checked against available market and industry data as well as internal data.

Delivered as CSV and Excel files, each in German and English, with 44 quarterly values. Related datasets: Plug-in solar device (balcony power plant), Home battery storage, PV inverter (string/hybrid) and all data on heating, ventilation, air conditioning and energy.
